Ingredients
For the Crust:
1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup sour cream
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup shortening
1 egg
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
For the Filling:
1 lb ground beef
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1 tbsp minced onion
1/2 tsp dry Italian seasoning
3/4 cup tomato paste
4 oz canned sliced mushrooms (optional)
Instructions
1. Prepare the beef filling by cooking ground beef in a skillet until browned.
2. Add salt, black pepper, minced onion, and Italian seasoning. Stir and cook for 2-3 minutes.
3. Stir in tomato paste and mix well until the filling is thick. Add mushrooms if using, then let the filling cool slightly.
4. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. Mix well.
5. Heat sour cream, water, and shortening in a saucepan until warm (120–130°F). Add to the flour mixture with the egg. Stir until the dough is smooth.
6. Spread the dough into a greased 9 or 10-inch pie pan, covering the bottom and slightly up the sides.
7. Spoon the beef filling into the prepared crust and spread evenly.
8. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese over the top.
9. Bake at 375°F for 30 to 35 minutes until the crust is golden and the cheese is melted.
10. Let cool for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
You can prepare the dough and filling a day ahead and store them separately.
To make it vegetarian, substitute ground beef with plant-based crumbles.
Use a blend of cheeses for a sharper flavor, such as mozzarella and provolone.
The pie freezes well for up to 2 months and reheats best in the oven or skillet.
