Description

Soft, chewy, and golden brown, this fluffy Greek pita bread recipe is easy to make and perfect for wraps, dips, or as a side to Mediterranean meals.

Ingredients

3 cups bread flour (or all-purpose flour)

3/4 cup warm water

6 tbsp warm whole milk

1 1/2 tsp sugar

1 1/2 tsp active dry yeast

3 tbsp olive oil

1 1/2 tsp salt

Instructions

1. In a medium bowl, combine warm water and milk. Make sure the liquid is warm to the touch but not hot.

2. Whisk in the sugar and then the yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.

3. Add olive oil and salt. Mix well.

4. Stir in flour gradually with a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms.

5. Transfer dough to a floured surface and knead for 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

6. Place dough back into the bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm spot for 1 1/2 hours until doubled in size.

7. Transfer the risen dough to a floured surface, form a circle, and divide into 6 equal pieces.

8. Shape each piece into a ball, place on parchment-lined baking sheet, and cover with a tea towel. Let rest for 1 hour.

9. Roll each dough ball into a 5-inch wide circle.

10. Heat a cast iron or non-stick skillet over high heat, then reduce to medium.

11. Place dough round in skillet, cook 30 seconds, flip, cook another 30 seconds.

12. Drizzle about 1 tbsp olive oil over both sides and cook 5 more minutes, flipping every minute.

13. Repeat for all 6 pitas. Serve warm with fresh oregano or tzatziki.

Notes

Store cooked and cooled pita in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

For longer storage, freeze for up to 2 months with parchment between each pita.

Great served with grilled veggies, hummus, or our viral spicy whipped feta.
